Odoo and ERPNext are the two leading open-source ERPs, and we implement both. They share a philosophy, integrated business apps without enterprise price tags, but differ in important ways. Here is our field-tested comparison.
Where Odoo shines
- Breadth of apps: CRM, sales, inventory, manufacturing, accounting, ecommerce, POS, marketing, HR and more, all natively integrated.
- Ecosystem: a massive marketplace of community and paid modules, plus a large partner network.
- Polish: a modern, fast interface that users generally take to quickly.
- Flexibility: the framework makes deep customization practical for developers.
The trade-off: Odoo Enterprise is licensed per user per year, and costs grow with your team. The free Community edition is capable but lacks some Enterprise features such as full accounting localization in some regions and Studio customization tools.
Where ERPNext shines
- Truly free: 100% open source with no enterprise edition, every feature is available without per-user licensing.
- Strong core: excellent accounting, manufacturing and project features out of the box.
- Simplicity of ownership: one codebase, transparent development, self-host or use Frappe Cloud.
The trade-off: a smaller ecosystem and partner network, fewer third-party modules, and an interface that, while much improved, is less polished than Odoo's in places.
How we advise clients to decide
Team size affects the math: at 10 users, Odoo Enterprise licensing is modest; at 100 users, ERPNext's zero licensing becomes a serious advantage. Industry matters too, Odoo's ecommerce and POS are stronger, while ERPNext manufacturing is remarkably complete for the price.
Implementation matters more than the logo
We have seen excellent and terrible implementations of both platforms. The deciding factor is rarely the software; it is process fit, data quality, training and support. Whichever way you lean, insist on a phased rollout and a partner with real references on that specific platform.
Still deciding?
We are an official Odoo partner and experienced ERPNext implementers, which means we profit either way, and can therefore give you an honest answer. Bring us your requirements and we will tell you which one we would pick in your shoes, and why.
